Going on a trip to a resort has been a long-time goal for your family, and it’s the perfect time to test those waters! But, if you’ve not been before or brought children to a resort, what will you really need? What do you need to prepare for your family’s first resort vacation?
Create a Packing List
If you like to be prepared in advance, it can help you to feel more in control of things to have a packing list well in advance. This means you can add or change things as you remember them. It can be helpful to use a list-making app or even a Google doc which can be shared between family members. That way, small things like sunglasses and sunscreen are not forgotten! Nobody wants to buy a new swimsuit because they’ve accidentally left it at home.
Help Them Feel Comfortable in the Water
If you have small children and are headed to a nice, warm location, you probably need to know they are secure in water. Classes can help children perfect specific swimming techniques that can improve their skills. With small children, get them accustomed to wearing life vests. Often you can rent vests for their weight groups for very little, and the peace of mind it gives helps immensely.
Practice “Sleeping Away”
If you have small children, and are headed to a location in a different time zone than where you normally have naps, this can cause a lot of complications to the steady sleep schedule of the family. You can fix this in two ways. First, prepare to use good skills for staying awake as much as possible that first day to attempt to reset jet lag. In advance, if you can, practice sleeping away from home in a hotel or a weekend visit to friends. This gives you the chance to perfect your technique of what you need for bedtime, so you don’t have a very exhausting vacation!
Your trip is going to be absolutely amazing! It’s a great time to practice learning new things, eating new foods, and having great adventures. Mirror the energy and example of adventure that you want to see. Make time for plenty of rest and activities for your family, and think of this first trip as a great practice adventure! Pretty soon, your kids will be traveling superstars, and ready to adventure anywhere you’d like!
